Mozambique Known as one of the poorest countries in the world, Mozambique has a colossal challenge ahead to provide stability, food and prosperity to its people after a 17 year long crippling civil war. The former Portuguese colony is still a beautiful country with some of the best beaches, coral reefs and turquoise waters in the whole of Africa, and although it is at this very moment still being redeveloped, tourism is starting to increase again. Beach resorts spring up around the marvelous coastline and some islands like Bazaruto has very good (but expensive) lodges with postcard quality island surroundings of crystal clear waters, palm trees and secluded white beaches. The country is still pretty much a travel destination for the independent seasoned traveler that wants to explore areas where very few Europeans have ever ventured or for those that can afford to fly between various resorts.

Geography

Mozambique is in Southern Africa and is bordered by Tanzania on the north, Malawi and Zambia in the north-west, Zimbabwe in the west and South Africa in the south. Along the east runs the warm Indian Ocean. The country consists of relatively low-lying coastal plains covered with palm trees, rising to higher plateau's towards the western border covered in wood and grasslands and mountains. Off the coast are various small islands and coral reefs.

Climate

The interior of the country is cooler due to the elevation, but the rainfall is higher too. The hot summer period is from October to March, but heavy rains can fall during January and February often accompanied with cyclones. April to September is the dry, warm winter season with cool evenings.

Central Lake Malawi
We soon catch sight of the lake where we will spend the next couple of carefree days. For the more adventurous there are endless leisure and water sport activities. Alternatively, soak up the atmosphere and relax in one of the most scenic and memorable holiday destinations in Africa! The evenings are spent beside its tranquil waters, enjoying the party atmosphere of this famous spot.

Optional Activities: Scuba diving, parasailing, windsurfing, fishing, canoeing, horse riding and many more…

South Luangwa National Park

We drive from Luangwa River to the South Luangwa National Park where we will spend two nights on the banks of the river. Much of the day will be spent getting to South Luangwa. If we get there early then an optional excursion to the community textile factory is recommended.  , you can choose between a morning or night game drive and a guided game walk accompanied by a professional local guide.

If the South Luangwa NP is not for you then relax by the pool or spend some time with the local communities here. South Luangwa is home to many unique animals that are not found elsewhere. On occasion in the rainy season it is impossible or inadvisable to attempt to reach South Luangwa NP, if this happens then an alternative itinerary will be followed. Normally groups decide to spend the additional nights in Malawi or on Zanzibar.

Optional Activities: Game Drive, Night Drive and Game Walk in South Luangwa NP

Zanzibar
A transfer by ferry takes us to Zanzibar where we will spend the next few days exploring this fascinating island with its renowned architecture, beautiful beaches and colorful people and history. The excursion  can vary depending on your preferred level of accommodation and activities.

Optional Activities: Zanzibar Excursion: Ferry, Food, Accommodation, Spice Tours, Dolphin Tours, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling.

The Zanzibar Island Experience
Lying off the coast of Tanzania +/- 80 km north of Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar is one of the undiscovered travel and holidays jewels on the African coast. White, powdery beaches lined with giant coconut palms swaying in the breeze. Azure blue seas beckoning in the distance. MAGIC. However those who expect something like Mauritius or the Comores will be in for a surprise. Not yet on the same level of development, Zanzibar Island attracts the more adventurous traveler. Yet Zanzibar Island with its mix of un-spoilt beaches, aquamarine, warm seas, incredible culture and interesting history, makes it the ideal tours, travel or holidays destination, but it will not be a secret for much longer

Scuba Diving Tours on Zanzibar Island

The island of ZANZIBAR brings images of idyllic tropical diving tours and beach holidays to mind. It has for many years been a favorite diving holiday and travel destination for those in the know, but has only recently become known as a superb diving destination. The Zanzibar Island diving reefs are in general shallow with clean and calm water. The coral is mostly unspoiled and teems with large numbers of tropical marine inhabitants.

Zanzibar/Dar es Salaam

Today we reluctantly leave Zanzibar and catch a late ferry (or flight) back to Dar es Salaam and return to our campsite. The evening can be spent reminiscing back at the campsite.

We will return from Zanzibar in the late afternoon and swap our stories around the bar. Ensure that you bring all your possessions with you when you leave Zanzibar. We will leave early tomorrow morning for Moshi

Dar es Salaam

Our route takes us on a transit through Mikumi National Park to the historical port city of Dar es Salaam. We will go down a bad pass (tar uneven) and go through an area called Baobab Valley, before reaching our destination

A long and scenic drive takes us to Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania. If there are clear skies en-route we might see Mt Kilimanjaro. After arriving in Arusha we prepare to explore the Serengeti National Park - one of the most abundant wildlife reserves in the world.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Tours

Snow capped and shrouded by clouds, the local Chagga people called it 'Kilema Kyaro' meaning 'that which cannot be conquered' or 'that which makes a journey impossible'. Today, it is the dream of every adventurer to conquer its summit and stand on the roof of Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain known to man. It is a mountain where you can hike for more than 50 kilometres, gain 4 000 meters in altitude, traverse rain forest, moorland, alpine desert, snow fields and ice cliffs, all virtually on the equator! A truly unforgettable and fascinating adventure . . .

How difficult is it climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

About 22,000 climbers set out every year to conquer the Mount Kilimanjaro peak. Several well-marked hiking/ trekking routes lead to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. To use the word "climber” is not always correct. Although none of these climbing routes really requires mountaineering skills, trekking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is physically and mentally demanding and should not be under estimated. As much as 40% of those who set out to climb Mount Kilimanjaro turn back before they reach Uhuru peak. With the adequate preparation any reasonably fit person above the age of 12 years can reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro successfully, in fact the oldest person to date to reach the summit was a Frenchman Valtee Daniel at an age of 87!!

The climbing Routes on Mount Kilimanjaro

There are mainly two climbing routes, which lead most hikers to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. They are the Marangu route, which is the main tourist and by far the most famous trekking route and the Machame route, probably the most scenic and most beautiful climbing route. Although other climbing routes also lead to Uhuru Peak (the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro), they mainly form parts of the Machame trekking route, like the Shira route from the Northwest

NGORONGORO CRATER

After an early breakfast we descend 600m into this magnificent crater to view wildlife for a full day's tour. You will witness an unforgettable spectacle of African wildlife - a world teeming with animals. Supported by a year round water supply and fodder, the park supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, giant elephants and a small population of black rhino. Another big draw to this picturesque park is it dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever elusive leopard. We will enjoy a picnic lunch at the hippo pool near the Mandusi Swamp, after which we will visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow lake in the southwestern corner of the crater. A large number of flamingos, hippos and other water birds can usually been seen here.

Serengeti/Ngorongoro

There are many options available, ranging from the one-day trip to the Ngorongoro crater, to a three-day trip into the Serengeti. , we give you every opportunity to match the activity to your budget.

The park covers 14,763 sq km of endless rolling plains, which reach up to the Kenyan border and extends almost to Lake Victoria. The park is flourishing with magnificent wildlife. An estimated 3 million large animals roam the plains. People of the Maasai Tribe called it Siringitu - 'the place where the land moves on forever.' The Serengeti is known as one of the best wildlife sanctuary in the world.

Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reservates have been established within this area. It's unique environment has enthused writers, filmmakers as well as numerous photographers and scientists. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth, the main characteristics of climate, flora and fauna have hardly changed in the past million years.

Serengeti is renown for the migration of animals. Every October and November, more than a million wildebeest and about 220,000 zebras travel south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short tropical rains, and then journey west and north after the long rains in April to June. The animals' ancient instinct to move is so strong that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back. The Wildebeest migrate through a number of parks, reserves and protected areas and through a variety of habitat.

Wildlife

The Serengeti boasts large herds of antelope including Patterson's eland, Klipspringer, Dikdik, Zebra, gazelles, lion, impala, leopard, cheetah, hyena and other larger mammals like the rhino, giraffe, elephant and hippopotamus. Nearly 500 species of birds have been recorded in the park. The Serengeti is an opportunity for one of the best game-viewing in Africa.

Migration in the Serengeti

The wildebeest migration, like a discernible thread, embraces and connects the Serengeti's ecosystem much as it has done for at least two millions years.
Every year, with some seasonally dictated variations in timing and scale, one million wildebeest leave the southern Serengeti's short grass plains in search of the grass and water they need to survive.
During their annual pilgrimage they will travel some 2.000 miles devouring 4.000 tonnes of grass a day. A quarter of a million will be born, many will die.

August
The migration and the ever-attendant predators trailing now cross the Ikorongo controlled Area. The various branches of the migration begin to meet up. The migration in a normal year should now be in the northern Serengeti and entering Maasai Mara. It is still cold in the mornings.

September
The migration has now entered Kenya's Maasai Mara Game Reserve just across the northern border from the Serengeti. Temperatures begin to rise and the skies are blue by day.
